What counts as light duty towing?
Towing services are usually grouped by the size of the vehicle being moved. Light duty towing is for the lightest group: the cars, crossovers, SUVs, minivans and half-ton or similar pickups that make up most of the traffic in Richmond. Small cargo vans and many service vans also fall into this group when they are not overloaded.
Larger vehicles such as cube trucks, buses and loaded commercial trucks need medium or heavy duty equipment. If you aren't sure which group your vehicle is in, give us a call with the make, model and roughly what it is carrying.
Vehicles we move with light duty towing
Here is a quick guide to what usually fits light duty towing and what to mention when you call. The more we know up front, the more likely the first truck is the right one.
| Vehicle | Usually light duty? | Tell us about |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan, hatchback, coupe | Yes | Drivetrain and any damage |
| Crossover or SUV | Yes | AWD or 4x4, roof box or bike rack |
| Minivan | Yes | Child seats or items left inside |
| Pickup truck | Yes, most | Load in the box, lift kit, hitch |
| Small cargo or service van | Usually | Shelving, tools and how full it is |
| Pickup with a trailer attached | Truck yes, trailer separately | Trailer size and what is on it |
How do you choose between wheel-lift and flatbed for light duty towing?
For a front-wheel drive car or a two-wheel drive pickup with no damage, a wheel-lift is often quick and practical. It lifts the drive wheels and lets the other axle roll. For AWD and 4x4 vehicles, EVs, or anything that can't roll freely, we use a flatbed so all four wheels are off the road.
Lifted trucks and long-wheelbase vans can need a bit more planning for clearance and deck length, so give us the details when you call.
Light duty towing for work vans and pickups in Bridgeport, Richmond
A broken-down van or pickup can stop a whole day of jobs. If your work vehicle won't start in the yard or quits on the way to a site, we can take it to your fleet shop, your regular mechanic or a dealer in Richmond or Vancouver.
Heavy tools, ladders and shelving add weight and can shift during a tow. Tie down or remove loose items, and tell us about anything heavy in the box or the back so it can be loaded safely. BC's cargo securement rules for commercial vehicles are built on the same idea: keep the load from shifting or spilling.
- Secure or remove ladders and roof-rack loads
- Close and latch the tailgate and rear doors
- Unhook any trailer, or tell us it needs a separate tow
- Take valuables and company paperwork with you
Light duty towing in Bridgeport, Richmond: yards, lots and family homes
North-east Bridgeport is full of warehouses and yards, and Van Horne Way is lined with industrial lots. More industrial units are planned on Van Horne Way, near River Drive. Many of our light duty towing calls there are pickups and work vans that won't start at the start of a shift. Let us know which gate or loading area the vehicle is in so the driver can find it without circling the lot.
Across the area in Tait, between River Rd, Shell Rd, Bridgeport Rd and No. 4 Rd, the newer family houses and townhouses mean a lot of SUVs and minivans. Driveways on streets like McKessock Place and Davies Place are often roomy enough to load right where the vehicle is parked.
Bridgeport Rd, where we are based, ties both areas together and is busy all day. If your vehicle quits there, pull into the nearest lot entrance if you can, so the tow can be done out of the traffic lane.
Questions drivers ask
Is a pickup truck light duty?
Most pickups are, including many three-quarter-ton trucks when they are not heavily loaded. Tell us the model and what is in the box.
Can you tow my van with tools inside?
Usually yes, if the load is secured. Heavy or loose items should be tied down or removed before loading.
Do you tow trailers as part of light duty towing?
A trailer generally needs to be unhooked and moved separately. Tell us its size and contents when you call.
What if my vehicle is too heavy for light duty?
We will tell you before we come out. Call us with the make, model and load so we can check.
