Why does the call matter so much when you need a tow in Bridgeport?
When you need a tow in Bridgeport, the dispatcher can only send what you describe. Leave out that the car is an AWD SUV in a parkade, and the wrong truck may roll up, then have to leave and come back. A clear two-minute call is definately the fastest part of the whole job.
Our Bridgeport towing guide covers the whole process. This post is just the call: what to say, in what order, so Zip Towing's Bridgeport crew or any tow company can get it right the first time.
Where exactly are you? Giving a location for a tow in Bridgeport
Location comes first, in case the call drops. Give a cross street and a business sign or house number you can see, plus your direction. 'Bridgeport Rd eastbound, just past Shell Rd, by the gas station' is far better than 'on Bridgeport.' On Hwy 99, say whether you are north or southbound and how far you are from the Bridgeport Rd exit; our Hwy 99 safety checklist covers staying safe while you wait.
In a lot, name the lot, the level and the row. If you are near the Knight Street Bridge or Mitchell Island, say which side of the bridge. If you're stuck in slow highway traffic, DriveBC shows current incidents and road conditions on provincial highways like Hwy 99, which can help you explain where the backup starts.
What vehicle details does a Bridgeport tow dispatcher need?
Make, model, year and colour help the driver spot you, especially in a busy lot full of similar cars. Drivetrain decides the truck: AWD, 4x4 and electric cars usually go on a flatbed, and our post on Bridgeport EV and Tesla towing explains why. Mention a lowered car, a body kit or a roof box too.
Say where the car sits. A condo garage means height limits and tight turns, so mention underground towing and the clearance sign if you can see it; our parkade towing guide has more. If there's a gate or buzzer code, have it ready and stay on the line untill you've passed it along.
What went wrong? Describe it so you might not need a tow at all
Say what happened, in plain words: it clicks but won't start, it died while driving, there was a bang and now it pulls left. Those clues tell the dispatcher alot. BCAA says its roadside team gets members going without a tow 80% of the time, and the same idea holds on any call: describe it well and a fix may be possible on the spot.
A clicking no-start often points to a battery boost. A car that ran out of gas may only need fuel delivery. See our full list of roadside assistance services.
Where is it going, and what will it cost?
Give the full drop-off address and whether someone will be there to take the keys. If it's a shop that's closed for the night, say so; the driver may need to know where to leave the car and the keys, or you may choose to take it home first. Then ask for the total price to that address, and whether a flatbed, after-hours or wait-time charge applies. Zip Towing confirms the price on the phone before we hook up.
Finally, ask how you will hear the truck is coming. Our post on tow truck wait times explains what affects the ETA. Here's a quick script you can read straight off your phone:
- I'm at (cross street or business), heading (direction).
- It's a (year, make, model), and it's (front-wheel drive, AWD or EV).
- It (what happened). It's on the street, in a lot or on parkade level (number).
- It needs to go to (address). What's the total price?
Calling from Bridgeport Rd, the station lot, the casino or a Tait driveway
Every part of Bridgeport has its own detail to mention. At the station park-and-ride, give the level and row. At River Rock, say which parkade level you're on and see our tips on towing from the River Rock Casino lot. In Tait, mention a narrow driveway or a car inside a garage.
Once the call is done, run through our checklist before the tow truck hooks up. For everything we tow, see our towing services. You can also send us the details in writing, or read more local guides on the Zip Towing blog.
Questions drivers ask
What if I don't know my car's drivetrain?
Give the make, model and year. The dispatcher can usually work it out, or look for AWD or 4WD badges on the back of the car.
What if I can't see a street sign?
Open the map app on your phone and read out the address or the nearest business it shows. Share your location by text if the company offers it.
Should I call 911 or a tow company first?
Call 911 first if anyone is hurt, there is smoke or fire, or the car is stuck in a live lane and you can't get clear. Call the tow once everyone is safe.
Will the dispatcher tell me the price before the tow?
You should always ask. Zip Towing confirms the price on the phone before we hook up.
